A Call to Words

I hate the term environmentalist. It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. I like what it stands for: someone who cares about the natural world, who is mystified and awed by the complexities of nature and the chaotic and fragile balance of life on earth; but it's so damn....clunky.

I also hate organic, sustainable, green, eco - these words are so boring. These words are stuck back in the flag-burning, granola-eating, dope-smoking sixties. And as much as I like granola for breakfast and starting fires; I can't relate.

Environmentalists (uggh) of today are a different breed. We care about the earth, we care about how are clothes are made, and where our coffee comes from, and what chemicals we're ingesting into our bodies, not because we're trying to "save the planet", whatever the hell that means, but because it's the obvious "right" thing to do. It makes sense. The modern environmentalist wants to make money, and look sexy, and eat greasy hamburgers, and drink too much whiskey, and listen to hip/hop and Rock Music, and watch videos on youtube of people getting hit in the nuts, as well as battle global warming and support socially responsible businesses.

So I put a challenge forth to this new generation that's quickly becoming the mainstream. I challenge all of us to come up with a new vocabulary to describe what we believe in. Make it resonate. Make me excited to be a part of it. We have all the right energy, all we need now is the right words. And let's do it quickly before our labels and definitions are made for us.
