We’re making great strides in the fight to significantly change America’s energy use, but it seems that old habits die hard. While Congress overwhelmingly passed new energy legislation that raises fuel mileage standards, invests in safer cleaner biofuels, and creates better energy standards for lighting and building, the bill was stripped of its renewable energy provisions, and for an added kick, the House managed to pass a spending bill which allows $30 billion in taxpayer money to go towards subsidies for dangerous polluting industries like nuclear power and coal. Why go to the trouble to pass new legislation if the “old boys club” is going to virtually negate any potential progress that can be made?
As NRDC’s energy and climate experts renew their efforts to create a better energy policy, Congress will likely be patting itself on the back for their so-called historic leap forward. Keep yourself informed on what’s really going on and let Congress know that we’re no longer satisfied with business as usual.
