A (peach)Tree Grows in Bayonne

Submitted by ktfinklea on Saturday, May 24, 2008.

Strapped for outdoor space around their Upper East Side school, the boys of the Browning School habitually venture out of the classroom to share in the vibrant green spaces New York City has to offer. One sunny Wednesday, I had the opportunity to accompany them on a different kind of outing. Thanks to Jonny Dubowsky of Rock 'n Renew and two very cool science teachers, the fifth grade class of Browning got to escape the island of Manhattan and venture into the “wilds” of Bayonne, NJ where some exciting new prospects in Urban Ecology are blossoming.

On the day when everyone collectively celebrates the Irish and all things green, perhaps it's also the time to think about giving back a little green to good old mother earth. Check out our Donation Page and think about buying a pint for the planet. Just a little green to keep her green.

Senate Passes Energy Bill and Sends Final Vote Back to House

Submitted by ktfinklea on Friday, December 14, 2007.

Looks like President Bush is going to get an early Christmas present from the Senate in the form of a House and Senate approved Energy bill. Let's hope he uses common sense to not veto what could be a major first step in the fight against global warming.

Vote Maintains House’s Fuel Mileage and Energy Efficiency Standards

WASHINGTON, DC (December 13, 2007) –The Senate today affirmed its determination to send an energy bill to the president’s desk before Christmas, by an 86-8 margin. Failing to reach the required 60 votes for cloture last Friday, Senate leadership brought the bill back for successful passage, while maintaining key aspects of the House-approved legislation.

We here at itsyournature love to throw a good eco-friendly party. Greening your event can be easier than you think. The key is to pick one thing and run with it.

I See My Light Come Shining

Not long ago I decided that, whether my roommates liked it or not, the apartment was going green. I switched the electricity over to wind and low-impact hydro, I replaced their fluffy white TP (which constantly clogged the toilet) with some eco-friendly Seventh Gen. But when it came to switching out our light bulbs… I balked. $5 a light bulb to make my apartment look like a cubicle in the financial district? No. Not gonna happen.

A Call to Words

I hate the term environmentalist. It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. I like what it stands for: someone who cares about the natural world, who is mystified and awed by the complexities of nature and the chaotic and fragile balance of life on earth; but it's so damn....clunky.

I also hate organic, sustainable, green, eco - these words are so boring. These words are stuck back in the flag-burning, granola-eating, dope-smoking sixties. And as much as I like granola for breakfast and starting fires; I can't relate.
