Bright Idea

Is the hurtful cold of winter causing you to pursue some form of lightbox therapy? If you're dying to let some light in, or looking to cut down on your energy consumption, read this blog from our friends at Simple Steps and check out the latest in light-emitting diodes.

Compact fluorescent light bulbs aren't the only option for conscious, energy efficient lighting. LED, which stands for light-emitting diodes, are small and incredibly durable. Buy one now and you may not have to replace it until 2028. LEDs last up to 60,000 hours -- five times longer than compact fluorescents and 50 to 60 times the lifespan of an incandescent bulb. They use so little energy that some don't have to be plugged in at all, running on solar power or a single battery.

Feds vs. California (round 2)

Submitted by ktfinklea on Monday, January 7, 2008.

According to an NRDC press release (seen below) California, along with an alliance of red and blue states and environmental partners, are asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to overturn the Bush administration's attempt to veto California's more stringent standards for car emissions. Since California has seen some of the worst impacts from global warming, it's understandable that they're not too jazzed about having D.C. feds tell them hey have no right to act in response to what's happening in their own backyards. Read the full press release below and then let us know how you feel about the issue.

OMG-- We Need Ideas!

There are prizes, and then there’s the $25 million prize being offered by the world’s most freewheelin’ C.E.O., Virgin–founder Sir Richard Branson. Branson, he of the airline and music fortune, is promising to pony up this princely sum to anyone who can figure out how the heck to “scrub” carbon dioxide out of the Earth’s atmosphere. As the world’s brightest minds start jockeying to win the “Virgin Earth Challenge,” expect to see plans for some tripped-out sky vacuums and carbon-absorbing concoctions. (As you can see, we won’t be banking any of the twenty-five mil.)
